Born in London, John Midgley grew up in Nairobi and Paris, where his mother, a painter, used to drag him around to see art house films and art exhibitions. He complained all the way, of course, but is now very grateful. That first contact with painting and film finds its way into his work to this day. His first introduction to photography came at age seven, when he modelled for Sarah Moon in Paris.

After studying photography at Bournemouth art college, he went to Indonesia with every intention of focusing on art and art only. However, finances dried up sooner than expected so he was forced to look for work as an advertising photographer. He picked up plenty of work and along the way his wife to be, Eva. Just before the birth of their first son, Luke, they left for his wife’s native Amsterdam. John started working in Europe, experimenting with fashion. He won awards at the Dutch and English associations of photographers for his fashion work. He started to work in Paris with View on Colour. His fashion work really took off after he photographed the first collection of Martin Margiela for Hermes. He then started to work in New York for Banana Republic and Neiman Marcus. Amidst all the travel and turmoil, Jake, their second son, was born. The growing family moved to London. John started to work for GQ magazine doing portraiture and soon went on to take many celebrity portraits and covers for magazines world-wide. Fred, their third son, was born in London.

John continued to work ever more in New York, to the point where he spent as much time there as in London. It was time for another move, and in April 2005 the family moved to Brooklyn. They are planning on staying. Meanwhile, John and Eva have started to shoot short films for London based luxury erotic boutique Coco de Mer. The first one, Honey & Bunny, was received to great acclaim in the UK creative press. They are currently working on the second one.
