Leon Chew was born in the North East of England in 1975.
Leon is a photographer in the most traditional sense of the word, in that his subjects are varied, he is steadfast to the craft of photography, shooting predominantly on large format film cameras, and his technique both on the shoot and in post-production is uncompromising.
Having moved from his home town to London in 1996 to pursue a career in photography, Leon spent 4 years working with eminent German photographer Norbert Schoerner before setting up his own studio in 2001. His work is regularly published in the magazines Wallpaper*, Modern Painters, Culture+Travel, Viewpoint and Wonderland. He works with the leading European advertising agencies including WCRS and M+C Saatchi, most recently completing a portrait campaign for Transport for London.
Parallel to his commercial and editorial work Leon is continuously building upon his personal archive: he has a series of subjects that he re-approaches on a cyclical basis, including, architectural planes, constructed street portraits, utilitarian objects from the urban landscape, and the influence of light pollution on the modern landscape. He has exhibited in several London galleries including The Jerwood Space, The Wapping Hydraulic Power Station and the Royal Institute of British Architects.
